There are numerous cases where sugars dramatically influence the physical, chemical and biological properties of drugs. There are also examples where sugars attached to peptides and small molecule drugs can increase activity and/or enhance certain pharmacokinetic properties. In addition, results show subtle changes in the sugar can change the solubility, tissue uptake, PK, potency and formulation of the drug to which sugars are attached. Centrose believes that altering drugs with specialized sugars is a promising new drug development and optimization strategy. The ability to play with the large and diverse chemical space that sugars provide could circumvent the adverse side effects that your drug leads may possess.

To this end, Centrose developed CarboConnect® in order to speed up the process and lower the costs of discovering sugar enhanced drugs. CarboConnect brings together automation, targeted sets of specialized sugars and enhanced biochemistries to rapidly manufacture and screen enhanced new drug leads. Centrose is focused on exploiting the pharmacological properties of specialized sugars to enhance drugs. The speed and efficiency of the enhancement process is important. CarboConnect allows the process to occur rapidly and virtually hands off. Centrose continues to perfect CarboConnect by adding new sugars, new automation elements, and new screening modules all focused on rapidly finding the futures blockbusters.


Our strategy is to rapidly generate targeted sets of small molecule therapeutics which differ solely by specified sugar attachments and move these through clinical trials. CarboConnect provides a robust discovery means to targeted drug leads for specific disease states. To date, we have successfully applied CarboConnect to the fields of oncology and anti-infectives.
